Talks
While there is no shortage of media coverage around refugee issues, it can often be misleading or inaccurate and fail to reflect people’s lived experience. Suffolk Refugee Support are keen to use our 25 years of work in this area to inform the debate. We can deliver a range of talks and presentations to community groups, statutory or voluntary sector organisations or schools (tailored to different ages). We explain who refugees and asylum seekers are, why people are forced to leave their countries, give up-to-date facts and figures and both global and local perspectives. We also have a ‘History of Refugees in Suffolk’ presentation available to deliver to local groups.
The talk certainly increased our pupils’ understanding of the issues and provoked many interesting discussions in subsequent PHSE lessons. I am sure the pupils will always remember this experience of meeting a real life asylum seeker and as a teacher observing, I was encouraged to see that many were able to empathise with him and his story.
