Hidden Harms

Hidden Harms – Community Engagement

Asylum seekers and refugees have a higher likelihood of being victims of certain Hidden Harms, which can cause harm to their physical and/or mental wellbeing. The Hidden Harms that Suffolk Refugee Support are focusing on are:

  • Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
  • Forced Marriage
  • Honour Based Violence (HBV)
  • Online dangers including sexual exploitation and radicalisation
  • Hate Crime – namely racist mistreatment and attacks
  • Workplace exploitation
  • Dangers to children from harmful practices that may be illegal in the UK but which are still acceptable in some refugee-producing countries

We have worked with the University of Suffolk to produce an interactive Hidden Harms game available in different languages as an accessible way for our clients and their community to be aware of these crimes.

Our part time Community Engagement Worker engages with the community, professionals and our clients to raise awareness, change attitudes and provide support around Hidden Harms. Please contact Michelle Francis, Community Engagement Worker – Hidden Harms for further information on tel: 01473 400785 or email: mfrancis@suffolkrefugee.org.uk

We couldn’t do the work we do without your support. Find out how you can get involved.

I want to help out.
